Dear friend,

The National Human Rights Consultation Committee is holding public hearings in Canberra from Wednesday to Friday this week, to allow key commentators to present their views on the issues most important to human rights protection in Australia today.
This is the final stage of the human rights consultation process where the public can participate - it’s critical that we have as many Amnesty International supporters and human rights defenders as possible attending on the day to keep the focus on the real need for a Human Rights Act for Australia.
Each day deals with a broad area relating to human rights protection in Australia:
- Wednesday 1 July: How are Human Rights and Responsibilities presently protected and promoted in Australia?
- Thursday 2 July: What difference would a Commonwealth Charter of Human Rights make?
- Friday 3 July: How Could We Better Protect Human Rights and Promote Responsibilities in Australia?
The public hearings are being held in the Great Hall of Parliament House, Canberra. Register now at the Human Rights Consultation Committee website.
The three days are further broken down into sessions on the critical human rights issues in Australia right now, such as:
- An overview of those who miss out and fall through the cracks of a fair go for all (Wednesday 1 July, 10:45-11:15am)
- A view to children’s rights (Wednesday 1 July, 4:40pm)
- The Great Debate - Does Australia Need a Charter of Rights? (Thursday 2 July, 1:10pm)
- The view from law enforcement (Thursday 2 July, 3:50pm)
- Perspective from younger Australians (Friday 3 July, 2:25pm)
You can view the full schedule of public hearings for more information.
Our National Director Claire Mallinson will be presenting in the Developing a culture of human rights: education, public awareness and active citizenship session at 2:40pm on Friday 3 July, and would love to have your support on the day.
Register now to attend the Consultation Committee’s public hearings
The Amnesty International community has done an outstanding job mobilising for the consultation process thus far, facilitating more than one-third of the total number of public submissions collected from all across Australia! I hope that you will be able to join us in participating in this final stage of the consultation process.
Kind regards,
